RRSO Academy

The RRSO U8 Academy Program

I don't believe skill was, or ever will be, the result of coaches.  It is a result of a love affair between the child and the ball.
-- Manny Schellscheidt -- famous US youth soccer coach

Who can participate?

Boys and girls who will turn seven (7) or eight (8) years of age during the 2020 calendar year (DOB:  Jan.-Dec 2011/2012) are eligible to participate.  We will also consider boys and girls who will turn six (6) during the current calendar year (DOB:  Jan-Dec. 2013) if they are deemed ready to participate by the Academy Director and the RRSO Board.

When is the Academy season?
The Academy program includes a fall, winter, and spring component with built-in breaks during several holidays.  Registration remains open year-round and new players can join anytime.

Where/When are practices/games?
FALL SEASON - Our training sessions will be held on Thursdays, from 5:00-6:00pm at Martin Park, beginning on 29 August. We will participate in Play Dates on six Sundays - September 15, 22, 29 & October 6, 13, 20. The first two will be hosted by North Ridgeville at their Root Road Soccer Fields; the second two will be hosted by Westlake at the St. John Westshore Hospital Fields; RRSO will host the final two at Linden Park. Play dates run from 1015am until 1115 am, and parents are encouraged to wear soccer shoes and participate. For some of them, the Academy set-up is their introduction to travel soccer, and playing goalie in the Play Date games gives them a chance to better appreciate their young players' learning process.

WINTER SEASON - Players will have 12 weekly training sessions, all held at the Force Indoor Sports Facility in Rocky River. Boys train 5:00-6:00pm on the following Mondays - December 2, 9, 16; January 6, 13, 27; February 3, 10, 24; March 2, 9, 16
Girls train 5:00-6:00pm on the following Tuesdays - December 3, 10, 17; January 7, 14, 21, 28; February 4, 11, 18, 25; March 3

SPRING SEASON - Please check back in February, as Spring 2020 training and Play Date details are still being determined.

What is the Academy Program?
The Academy is a young player's introduction to soccer.  Players learn the basic skills of the game through fun yet challenging activities under the guidance of professional coaches.

What is the difference between Academy and other programs?
Academy is player-centered.  The "game" is the main teacher, not the coaches.  The aim is to develop self-motivated players who can solve "soccer problems" on their own.

Is the U8 Academy the right choice for my son or daughter?
The U8 Academy is for boys and girls who intend to play competitive soccer.  Players must be able to follow instructions, and stay engaged in activities.  Players who are "not ready" will receive a refund, and will be invited to try again the next season.

How do I sign-up/how much does it cost?
You must register to create an account at  You will then be taken through the sign-in process.  The RRSO Academy costs $200.  The Academy is designed as a year-long program with a Fall, Winter, and Spring component.

Is there anything else I should know?
The Academy will also provide "a la carte" opportunities to participate in tournaments and league play.  During the winter session, Academy parents may enter teams into an indoor league.  We will also enter teams into tournaments during the course of the year.  The league and tournament fees will be determined and charged as those events happen.

Who should I contact if I have questions?
Feel free to email Academy Director Kevin Zerbey at [email protected].
